Many of us experience butt acne and scarring for various reasons, and it can significantly affect us both physically and mentally. However, whether you're interested in anal play or not, butt acne can cause discomfort and embarrassment. The good news: prevention and treatment methods exist. Causes of Butt Acne & Acne Scarring

So, what causes butt acne and acne scarring? Unfortunately, there can be many culprits, and sometimes they work together. They include:

  • Sweating: Your booty is where the sun doesn’t shine, and moisture tends to lurk down there, especially after working out. Some people notice itchiness, when they stay in their gym clothes or bathing suits for too long, and others notice visual manifestations — like tiny red bumps and pimples — from not showering and properly cleansing the skin after a sweaty activity. If someone is hairy, the combination of sweat and hair can cause further irritation to the skin.

  • Friction: There’s good friction (sex with plenty of lubrication) and bad friction (clothes or sheets excessively rubbing up against skin and body hair). The latter has a tendency of causing redness, chafing, bumps, and even acne.

  • Poor Hygiene: Much like properly washing your face has a huge impact on facial acne, properly washing your booty — especially in between the cheeks — is essential for helping fight butt acne. We need it to be clean and dry. This includes properly moisturizing without feeling greasy and oily (more on that below). Bacteria is ridden in everything we do, own, and wear. Our bodies, most of the time, can keep the balance between the good, the bad, and the ugly. It’s when the imbalance is present that one can have negative consequences. And it’s not only bacteria, it’s also fungal and viral infections that can manifest from poor overall hygiene.

  • Shaving and grooming: Shaving, waxing, sugaring, and chemical hair removers (like Nair) can all cause skin irritation and ingrown hairs, which often result in butt acne. These methods of hair removal are traumatic to the skin, and if they aren’t done by a professional who specializes in hair removal in intimate areas, you run the risk of developing painful red bumps or pus-filled pimples when the hair grows back in.

  • Wet wipes: People use these because they like the freshly-showered feeling post-poop, without the hassle of actually having to shower. Unfortunately, many patients come to me with itchy, irritated booties and most frequently use wet wipes. Wet wipes do two things: they produce excess moisture, and they wipe away both the good and bad bacteria (called the anal microbiome), which creates an imbalance in this otherwise harmonious relationship. The result? Skin irritations, itching, butt acne, and even an HPV or Herpes outbreak.

  • Proper skin hydration: Some people use moisturizers that include irritating ingredients for sensitive skin, or they’re so thick and occlusive that they can clog your pores and make your skin excessively greasy, making it the perfect breeding ground for acne.

 

How To Get Rid of Butt Acne

Now, onto some good news: let’s talk about ways you can clear up your skin and glow from head to toe (and everywhere in buttween).

1. Upgrade Your Hygiene

Just because it’s your booty doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve the same TLC your other body parts do. Here are some ways that you can pamper your booty and protect it against acne:

  • Shower after working out: I cannot stress enough how important it is to shower right after you exercise, which helps prevent sweat from accumulating and festering on your skin, especially when it’s trapped in sweaty underwear. Some people may exhibit physical manifestations of irritation, like itching, while others may only experience acne. Either way, getting out of those sweaty clothes, into the shower, and then into fresh clothes is a great place to start to get rid of butt acne.

  • Shower at night before bed: There are few things grosser than hopping into bed while still wearing the day’s leftover poop, sweat, and grime. No matter how clean you think you were during the day, showing before bed is a must. I love a nighttime scrub routine and make sure you get every nook and cranny (yes, even in between your cheeks). Then, be sure to fully dry yourself off before leaving the bathroom. I love using a hair dryer because it helps ensure you’re completely dry, and finishing with a soothing cream to help moisturize the skin. How you sleep is up to you, but I recommend sleeping naked, or at least in very loose clothing, which helps to let everything breathe. If you sleep in clothes, make sure you also let your moisturizer dry completely before pulling up whatever you’re wearing on bottom.

  • Change your underwear regularly: Believe it or not, I have so many patients who re-wear the same underwear for a couple of days or after working out. This is a recipe for butt acne because you’re subjecting your genitals to constant interaction with poop, sweat, and other particles that can cause irritation and acne. Not only do I recommend changing into a new pair of underwear at least once a day, but I also want people to get into the habit of replacing underwear regularly, especially ones that have dri-fit technology because repeatedly washing them will cause features like this to stop working.

  • Change your bedding regularly: This is another habit that people should abide by. Sure, changing and washing sheets can be a pain in the ass, but not as big of a pain in the ass as butt acne and other skin irritations. Frequently changing your sheets and pillowcases will help avoid bacterial buildup, which can irritate the skin. Same goes for towels.

 

2. Switch to Breathable, Loose Clothing

This simple trick can make a big impact on your skin. Tight clothing can cause unnecessary friction, and can trap sweat, dirt, and feces on the skin, which can all cause butt and body acne to develop.

This applies to being out and about, as well as while you’re sleeping. For the latter, sleeping naked isn’t just about feeling sexy (though that’s definitely a benefit) — it actually serves the same purpose: helping reduce skin irritation and potential butt and body acne. It’s easy for moisture to get trapped in between the cheeks, especially when it’s warm and you’re wearing clothes or using heavy sheets that don’t breathe.

Light, airy, breathable fabrics can help minimize friction and irritation by keeping the skin cool, calm, and dry. Great choices for sheets, underwear, and clothing include linen and cotton because they keep air flowing. We’ve discussed what to do, but now it’s time to educate you on what not to do when you suffer from butt acne.

  • Avoid Harsh Scrubbing: Refrain from harsh scrubbing or aggressive exfoliation, as it can irritate the skin and worsen butt acne. Instead, opt for a gentle scrub that utilizes different types of exfoliants to target skin imperfections without causing more.

  • Don't Pick or Squeeze: For some people, this one is hard to do, but try to resist the urge to pick, squeeze, or pop butt acne lesions, as it can lead to scarring, infection, and prolonged healing.
